A Greenpoint institution behind the sausage curtain
Kiszka — officially W-Nassau Meat Market, but nobody calls it that — has anchored Manhattan Avenue for more than four decades. It's the old-school Polish butcher shop the neighborhood was built around: kielbasa hanging in loops behind the counter, smoked meats by the pound, and a line out the door before every Polish holiday.
The name is a tell. A kiszka is a traditional Polish blood sausage — and a shop confident enough to name itself after one takes its sausage seriously. Fresh, smoked, and white kielbasa are made the traditional way, alongside hams, cold cuts, and cured meats sliced to order.
The kielbasa counter
This is what people cross the neighborhood — and the river — for. Rings of fresh and smoked kielbasa, white kielbasa at Easter, kiszka, and a full deli case of hams and cold cuts. Come the holidays, the line down Manhattan Avenue is part of the tradition.
